T.M. Devine

A Professor at the University of Edinburgh, T.M. Devine was knighted in 2014 for services to the study of Scottish history, having earned the greatest accolades in the field throughout his distinguished career. We welcome Devine as he publishes The Scottish Clearances, an examination of the nation’s dispossessed.

Exploring the coercive and often violent means by which traditional social relationships were undone, and how the terrible processes of clearance changed the entirety of Scotland—not only the Highlands—Devine constructs an enlightening single volume account of this important historical saga. He explodes old myths, and places human and cultural loss at the forefront of his account, telling a tale of how lives were irreparably changed in the name of economic efficiency.
