Professor of Modern History and Co-Director of the Institute of Intellectual History at the University of St Andrews, Richard Whatmore joins us to celebrate his latest book, Terrorists, Anarchists, and Republicans: The Genevans and the Irish in Time of Revolution.
Richard tells of a bloody episode when, in 1798, Irish republicans were massacred by the British amid the ruins of a half-built town near Waterford, known as the Genevan Barracks. This ‘New Geneva’ had been the site of an experimental and fiercely independent Calvinist community which eventually failed. Terrorists, Anarchists, and Republicans contains a truly fascinating story of revolution, liberty, and empire.
