Inspired by the French Revolution, a group of Scottish political martyrs struck a shudder of fear through the landowning oligarchy, leading a charge of opposition against the King and his government. As leading radicals were transported to Botany Bay and economic hardship swept across the country, the flame of radicalism was further ignited, driving forward those who were prepared to use physical force in defence of their ideals.
