John Goodland on Food From the Sea and The Salt Roads
We are thrilled to welcome John Goodland to the bookshop for a talk on both the past and future of the sea, and how it has shaped human culture.
A native of Shetland, John has a lifetime of experience on or by the sea, spending every summer holiday as a crew member on board local boats. Beginning his career working for the Shetland Fishermen’s Association, he was responsible for several important fisheries management initiatives.
In The Salt Roads John ranged from the wild waters of the North Atlantic, the ice-filled fjords of Greenland, the remote islands of Faroe to the dining tables of London's middle classes, the bacalao restaurants of Spain, and the Jewish shtetls of Eastern Europe to explore how seafood has shaped so many aspects of human culture.
Food From the Sea looks at the challenges and opportunities facing the global seafood industry, taking the reader around the world, from Scotland to Mexico, Canada to South East Asia and from Norway to Australia. In each location the story is told of the special people of the sea – the last of the ocean hunters and the first of the ocean farmers.
