John Simpson is a living legend amongst news correspondents. Over a distinguished fifty year career at the BBC he has established himself as one of his generation’s most authoritative and empathetic reporters.

There are few as qualified as Simpson to tell the story of the war correspondent. He has reported on all of the major conflicts of our time with an unflinching gaze and a deep understanding of the tensions, human stories and terrible consequences of war. He has brought us remarkable insights both as a reporter, and as a writer. His works include several volumes of autobiography with first hand accounts of the Tiananmen Square massacre, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the return of Khomeini to Iran. Simpson has also delivered a subtle, critical account of his own field in Unreliable Sources and an analysis of the West’s relationship with Iraq in The Wars Against Saddam.

In We Chose to Speak of War and Strife, he brings us pivotal moments in our history – from the Crimean War to Vietnam, the siege of Sarajevo to the fall of Baghdad – through the eyes of those who risked life and limb to witness them first hand. It is an honour to welcome John Simpson to share these astonishing tales of perseverance and courage in person.
