Author of twenty-two novels, including The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, A Far Cry from Kensington, and The Girls of Slender Means, Muriel Spark is undoubtedly one of Scotland’s literary treasures. A latecomer to novel writing, her books capture the fullness of life: from her Edinburgh childhood, her work in black propaganda during World War II, and her pivotal conversion to Catholicism, Spark was preternaturally attuned to questions of character, artifice, and truth.
To celebrate the centenary of her birth, Polygon are republishing all of her novels in handsome hardback editions, each introduced by an acclaimed contemporary writer, alongside Appointment in Arezzo, a memoir written by her friend Alan Taylor.
Zoe Strachan and Rosemary Goring (who have introduced Memento Mori and The Girls of Slender Means, respectively) join Alan in the bookshop to shed light on every aspect of Spark’s work and life. For fans and newcomers alike, this evening will show Spark not only as a cunning storyteller, but as a confidante, a companion, and a crucial presence in the literary canon.
