Since its publication in 1922, James Joyce’s Ulysses has been one of the most discussed and disputed novels ever written. Whilst for many Stephen Deadalus and Leopold Bloom’s tragicomic wanderings round 1904 Dublin constitute one of the most dazzling, hilarious, and richly entertaining reading experiences literature has to offer, others are repelled by the book’s forbidding length, allusiveness and experimentation. Robert Jones of Topping & Company – a lifelong Ulysses enthusiast  – presents a two part Centenary Bloomsday event devoted to this divisive masterpiece. Rather than attempting a laborious academic analysis, they will concentrate on introducing some particularly interesting strands of Joyce’s exuberantly comic design. The first session, on the First Floor of the Bookshop from 7.30 – 9.45pm on Thursday, June 16th, will describe something of the book’s creation, the innovative nature of it’s technique and the mythological framework of its design. There will be a break in which an appropriate Bloomsday snack of gorgonzola sandwiches will be served. The second session will take place in the Shop Flat on Sunday, June 19th from 4 – 6.30pm and will consider two aspects of the book in which Robert takes a particular interest – Parody and MusicThere will be a break for coffee and cake.   The sessions are booked together at the price of £35, including a voucher for £10 redeemable against any book in the shop. If you can only make one session, please select the £25 early bird option.
