In recent years the remarkable novels of the Nobel Prize-winning Icelander Halldor Laxness have been re-discovered to a new generation of English-language readers. Written towards the end of his long and eventful life, Fish Can Sing, is a a warmly affectionate and atmospheric evocation of the world of his childhood, that finds him at his most approachable. Following the early life of Alfgrimur (literally, "He Who Spends his Nights with the Elves")  in a traditional Icelandic fishing village, the novel - full of eccentric characters and quirky comic detail - is charged with a great generosity of spirit, making it an ideal introduction to one of the 20th Century's greatest writers. We have two reading groups each month in The Bookshop, usually on the second Tuesday (but occasionally on another day) at 7.30pm. Choose from two intriguing books handpicked by our booksellers leading the groups. We are open from 7pm for peaceful after hours browsing before you join us for a friendly and relaxed discussion. Admission book vouchers are £7 and are redeemable against any book in the shop on the night. Places must be booked in advance and it helps if you have read the book beforehand. Groups are held on the First and Second Floors.
