This is the second date for the second part of Robert’s introduction to Modern American Poetry.

Following his first sell-out session, Robert Jones continues his three part introduction to modern American Poetry by looking at the complex, varied and energetic poetic scene that flourished in the United States from the 1930s to the 1950s. During this period many exciting individual talents emerged, including John Berryman, Elizabeth Bishop, Ed Dorn, Robert Duncan, Robert Lowell, Charles Olson, George Oppen, Theodore Roethke, Anne Sexton and Louis Zukovsky – some of them committed to extending the modernist revolution of the previous generation, others to reclaiming a more conservative aesthetic. Covering a huge range of writing, from the comic to the  tragic, the epic to the intimate, and blending discussion of individual texts with lively biographical anecdote,  this second session looks at the conflicting aims and styles of such self proclaimed movements as The Objectivists and Fugitives, as well as the explosion of “confessional” verse and the bold poetic experiments associated with Black Mountain.

The day will finish at 4.30pm.
