Colin Thubron published his first book, Mirror to Damascus, in 1967. Since then, he has established himself as one of our finest writers with a succession of travel books and a parallel career as a novelist. Night of Fire is his latest, and finest, novel. In a burning house, the stories of six tenants and their landlord unfold and collide. The passions and obsessions in a dying house loom and shift, from the hallucinating drug addict in the basement to the landlord training his telescope on the night skies. The tenants’ stories range through an African refugee camp, a Greek Orthodox sanctuary and the cremation-grounds of India: memories that start to criss-cross and mutate in a novel of lingering beauty and mystery. This chance to hear one of the great names of British letters is not to be missed!
