Patrick Leigh Fermor’s acclaimed biographer and close friend, Artemis Cooper, introduces The Broken Road: the long-awaited final volume of Leigh Fermor’s trilogy, left unfinished at his death in 2011. Co-edited by Cooper and Colin Thubron, it takes up the thread where Between the Woods and the Water left off. Leigh Fermor’s journey on foot across 1930s Europe – just as the storm clouds of war were gathering – proved to be so rich in experiences that the account overflowed into three volumes. The legendary account that began with A Time of Gifts has become a classic of travel literature, leaving readers captivated, inspired, and longing for more. Artemis will be sharing her passion for Paddy’s work, giving us an amazing insight into the interplay of his memory and imagination, and exploring why he found it so difficult to put his experiences on paper, despite being a brilliant wordsmith. Join us for a very special event indeed, and the final chapter of an extraordinary journey.
