This is a rare privilege – Tim Winton, one of the great voices in contemporary fiction, is on a brief visit to the UK and we are delighted to bring him back to Ely. Widely recognised for his depiction of Australians and the land where they live, Tim is a keen environmentalist whose love of the land, and especially the sea, is reflected in the way he uses landscapes and places for inspiration. But it is his characters who bring his books alive, and his use of language, boisterous, lyrical and tough, which set him apart. The Shepherds Hut encapsulates all Winton’s usual themes of place, nature and especially masculinity, and in Jaxie Clackton gives us maybe his greatest character yet. If you know Tim Winton’s writing you won’t want to miss this evening; if you haven’t, this is the time to make his acquaintance.
