Welcome to our Queer Fiction Reading Group!
This is an inclusive reading group open to anyone to come together to read and discuss LGBTQIA+ literature, with titles handpicked by Sanna. Through a queer lens we’ll explore everything from overlooked queer classics to groundbreaking works of contemporary literary fiction.
For April we are reading Christopher Isherwood's masterpiece A Single Man. Written in 1964, this story is both a tender portrayal of a love that has been lost and a poignant look at the strength of the human spirit to find pleasure and meaning in the face of adversity.
Los Angeles, 1962. George is adjusting to life on his own after the sudden death of his partner, determined to persist in the routines of his daily life. An Englishman and a professor living in suburban Southern California, he is an outsider in every way, and his internal reflections and interactions with others reveal a man who loves being alive despite everyday injustices and loneliness. Wry, suddenly manic, constantly funny, surprisingly sad, this novel catches the true textures of life itself.
"A work of compressed brilliance." The Guardian
"A quarter-century ahead of its time in its portrayal of a quotidian homosexual life, it inspired a generation of gay writers in Britain and the US." The Independent
"A testimony to Isherwood's undiminished brilliance as a novelist." Anthony Burgess
