Calling all poetry lovers in Edinburgh – come and join us every second Monday of the month for our poetry reading group. From Queer and BAME voices, to Native American poets and poems in translation, our reading group will be an opportunity to explore an eclectic range of poetry.
No need to have read every poem from a collection or every collection from a poet! Come along for a casual conversation, to share interpretations and find meaning together.
This April, our poetry reading group will turn to Victoria Adukwei Bulley's phenomenal debut, Quiet. Shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot, winner of both the Rathbones Folio Prize and the Forward Prize, this collection gathered on its release praises from the likes of Bernadine Evaristo and Kayo Chingonyi.
Quiet raises the question of how to encounter meaning amidst many kinds of noise. What is quiet when it isn't silence? Victoria circles around ideas of black interiority, intimacy and selfhood, playing at the the tensions between the impulse to guard one's 'inner life' and the knowledge that, as Audre Lorde writes, 'your silence will not protect you'.
We hope you can join us for what promises to be another engaging discussion, with nibbles and a drink.
