Join us on July 1st for our next meeting of the Feminist Fiction Reading Group! This session we will be transported back to 1940s New York City with Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote.

This adds to our growing list of classic novels that we have examined for our Feminist Fiction Reading Group, however this is the first novel we are reading written by a man. This fact is going to be quite important for our discussion, since this book is all about a female socialite, Holly Golightly--narrated from the perspective of a man who is obsessed with her. She is meant to be the picture of class and sophistication, but what does it say about gendered standards considering her characteristics were created from a man?

This book is also synonymous to the 1961 Audrey Hepburn movie, which could arguably be more famous than the book itself due to Hepburn's iconic performance. But there was also trouble between Truman Capote and Audrey's role, as well as some interesting arguments that arose between Capote and the real-life socialites he stole Golightly's character from. Breakfast at Tiffany's has such an interesting history with a web of gossip and backstories behind it, which is fascinating for a book that is novella-length. I will list some Non-fiction recommendations for further reading in case you're wanting to learn more in anticipation to our July session.

Each place costs £5 per ticket, which can be redeemed as a voucher towards a copy of the book. We hope you’ll join us for some great conversation, and a glass of wine on us!
