This is no April Fools Joke, for on the 1st of April we will be discussing the mid-century classic, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. To carry on in a slightly new direction for the Reading Group, this is another title that is more vintage, but carries a lot of history with it. Especially since the book has had a wave of popularity with "book-tok" and other social media outlets have revived the feminist narrative. Specifically due to the topics surrounding mental illness and the tragic death of Sylvia Plath herself.

More about The Bell Jar:

Working as an intern for a New York fashion magazine in the summer of 1953, Esther Greenwood is on the brink of her future. Yet she is also on the edge of a darkness that makes her world increasingly unreal. Esther's vision of the world shimmers and shifts: day-to-day living in the sultry city, her crazed men-friends, the hot dinner dances . . .

The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath's only novel, is partially based on Plath's own life. It has been celebrated for its darkly funny and razor sharp portrait of 1950s society, and has sold millions of copies worldwide. It has also appeared on the BBC's list of "100 Novels That Shaped Our World."

Join us on the 1st of April as we read (or re-read) this classic, and also have a glass of wine on us!
Please note that places for this reading group are very limited. If you book a place and can’t make it, we would be grateful if you could let us know as soon as you can so that we can offer your place to someone else.
