Young Adult Reading Group

It’s been a long time in the works, and we're very happy to announce that Wednesday 26th October will be the first instalment of our Young Adult Reading Group led by our own YA aficionado Maisy.

Join us in the bookshop around 7:15pm for tea, coffee, and biscuits at the book club which will start at 7:30pm.

Our reading group will be an opportunity to explore an eclectic range of the best of the Young Adult genre - both fiction and nonfiction. It's a chance for 14-22 year olds to discover new genres, form new opinions, and make like-minded bookish friends. Maisy is busy powering through possible books for the following months, and is excited to announce that our October pick is Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim.

If you're planning on attending every month of the reading group, our chosen read will be announced on the 15th of each prior month through an event listing or our Instagram (@toppingsbath). The books will be available right from the announcement for you to get started on reading!

The cost of this ticket takes £5 off of the price of the book, meaning that you'll pay only £3.99 for your copy. If you already have a copy of the chosen read you can just buy a standard ticket and bring along your book!

You can collect your copy of Six Crimson Cranes any time between now and the book group- we have plenty of stock ready and waiting for you to pick up. We hope that you enjoy it, and can't wait to hear your thoughts on the 28th!

(Unfortunately at this time we are unable to take on any readers under 14 and over 22 but we hope to open up other groups in the future to cover all ages.) We want it to be a space with an emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility, where everyone feels able to share their thoughts about the books we study. So don't be shy - come along and make some friends!

Six Crimson Cranes

Shiori'anma, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret. Forbidden magic runs in her veins. And on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control. At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted, but it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother.

A sorceress in her own right, Raikama banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes, and warning Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die.

Penniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and uncovers a dark conspiracy to seize the throne. Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in a paper bird, a mercurial dragon, and the very boy she fought so hard not to marry. And she must embrace the magic she's been taught all her life to contain - no matter what it costs.
