Independent publisher Peirene’s relaunch party!
Saturday 14th May 2022
The Bookshop
6pm

Join us on the evening of Saturday 14th May to celebrate independent publisher Peirene’s move to Bath and new ownership!
Peirene was set up in 2008 by Meike Ziervogel as an independent publisher dedicated to collectable editions of translated European novellas. Since then the press has published more than 40 books featuring translations from 17 languages and has had its titles nominated for the International Booker Prize seven times. This year, Peirene announced that James Tookey and Stella Sabin are stepping up to become the new co-directors and that the press is relocating to Bath.
We’re delighted to announce that our bookshop will house the official relaunch party for Peirene.
All are welcome, and the event is not ticketed. It will be held in the bookshop between 6pm to 8pm. Come and join us for an evening of literary merriment, and give them a very warm welcome to Bath!

Our party will also be the first opportunity to get your hands on their first book since relaunching, the brilliant Of Saints and Miracles by Manuel Astur.
Marcelino lives alone on his parents’ farm, set deep in the beautiful but impoverished countryside of northern Spain. It’s the place where he grew up, the place where he doted on his beloved baby brother and protected his mother from his father’s drunken rages. But when Marcelino’s brother tricks him out of his house and land, a moment of anger sparks a chain of events that can’t be reversed. Marcelino flees to the wild peaks of rural Asturias, becoming a cult hero as he evades authorities.
Into this unconventional crime story, Astur weaves fables about the sun and the moon, tales of death and love, and reveals a community and a way of life that may soon be lost. Of Saints and Miracles is a sensuous and poetic portrayal of an outcast’s struggle to survive in a changing world, and a seamless blend of the tragic and the majestic.
