For the March Fiction Reading Group I’ve chosen one of my favourite novels from last year. Originally published in Turkey in the 1940’s, Madonna in a Fur Coat, made little to no impact on its initial release. However, over the decades it continued to be passed from friend to friend, and has since become Turkey’s most read novel. With Penguin’s English translation published in 2016, the novel now has the size and scope of audience it has always deserved.
Madonna in a Fur Coat tells an incredible story of love between people on the fringe of their respective societies. Though the book is now over 70 years old, it reads beautifully, as if it were written yesterday. It is a rare thing, a timeless, and almost unacknowledged, classic.
Join us for a relaxed and friendly conversation between a group of incredibly lovely people of a variety of ages. We always have wine and tea and coffee available, as well as a selection of nibbles.
I hope to see you there!
