Louis de Bernières transports us back to the vivid Mediterranean landscape of his novels, in his début poetry collection Imagining Alexandria. The poems are a blend of the erotic and the philosophical, rich in history and longing – the perfect homage to Cavafy, whose Collected Poems have stayed in de Bernières’ pocket ever since he was introduced to the work on a visit to Corfu in 1983.
This will be a wonderful evening of readings and talk about Greece, and will appeal just as much to admirers of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin as it will to poetry aficionados. Imagining Alexandria is a small jewel of a book, the perfect guide to the great Alexandrian poet, and illustrated with beautiful line drawings: a meeting of two great minds that deserves to be witnessed.
