Yu Miri is one of Japan’s most exciting contemporary writers, whose work confronts taboos in Japanese society such as suicide and child neglect with fearless perception. In Tokyo Ueno Station, a homeless man looks back on his life, his migration to the big city and the state of the nation. Join Yu Miri and her translator Morgan Giles as they lift the lid on contemporary Tokyo through discussion of their work.

The event will be chaired by writer and broadcaster Bidisha.

Part of Japan Now 2019. Programmed by Modern Culture in partnership with the Japan Foundation and Sheffield University. Supported by Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, the Japan Society and the National Centre for Writing. Part of Japan-UK Season of Culture 2019-20
