Jane Gardam is back with the final chapter of the Old Filth trilogy, the story of Old Filth QC: Titan of the Hong Kong law courts. Gardam is attuned to the contradictions of the human heart, and her storytelling is a winning blend of black humour and tenderness. Each part of this stunning trilogy is a fine stand-alone work: Last Friends approaches the story from the perspective of Terence Veneering, Filth’s great rival in work – and in love. Veneering, son of a Russian acrobat, escaped from the war to find success and fame, but is the object of much suspicion: where did he come from?
This evening is a chance to meet one of our greatest novelists, as she discusses her craft and the bittersweet human story of a now-forgotten Empire.
