In November we'll be discussing Herland, a utopian novel written by The Yellow Wallpaper author Charlotte Perkins Gilman!
Herland is an account of a feminist utopia in which three male explorers stumble upon an all-female society isolated in a distant part of the earth. Friction occurs between the women and the men based on the men's perception of what a woman should be and how the society functionally operates.
Following its publication in The Forerunner, Herland and its sequel, With Her in Ourland, were largely forgotten throughout the mid-20th Century. In The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, David Pringle referred to Herland as "an important feminist work, long forgotten, and recently published for the first time in bookform."
"Though it reads like a plucky sci-fi adventure serial, at Herland’s heart is an unapologetically feminist treatise." -Lindy West, The Guardian
