Giuseppe Dell’Anno won hearts the world over when he was crowned winner of the Great British Bake Off 2021. This evening he will treat us to a demo and tastings from his first cookbook, Giuseppe’s Italian Bakes, where he shares his skills, knowledge and love of baking, born from growing up in Italy and learning to cook at the side of his beloved chef-father.

Much more than a beloved folder of recipes this is a collection of memories. For Giuseppe each bake reminds him of family gatherings and tables packed with delicious food. Many of the dishes have
been developed from Giuseppe’s father’s handwritten notes, bringing a real sense of legacy to these quintessential Italian family recipes. Giuseppe’s simple and effective home bakes are deliberately designed to be accessible to the most inexperienced baker, as well as to those that have already been baking for a while. There are delicious sweet recipes, from Torta della Nonna filled with pistachio cream, sweet and simple little Ricciarelli dusted with sugar, and childhood favourites Occhi di Bue (almond biscuits with jam), to a smooth and silky Panna Cotta al Marsala, and the syrupy choux pastries Zeppole di San Giuseppe finished with a decadent swirl of cream. Not to be outdone, Giuseppe’s savoury selection of bakes boasts his iconic Focaccia Barese topped with olives, tomatoes and herbs, a filled cloud-like tear-and-share Danubio Salato bread, flaky puff-pastry Rustici Leccesi, and handheld hot Calzoni with a variety of fillings including Courgette and Ricotta, Rapini and Sausage, and Octopus.
