Welcome to the Feminist Fiction Reading Group!
Every month, we will delve into one book written by an amazing female author. The book of the month has been chosen to fit in with a particular theme, but this is just the launching point! There will be ample opportunity to get into the nuances and grittier details of each book.
Alongside each month’s fiction choice, there will also be a suggested further reading pairing of nonfiction books which highlight the theme, either complementing or challenging it.
April’s choice is Olive by Emma Gannon, exploring the theme of motherhood. Published in 2020, this acclaimed debut tackles the complicated and often taboo subject of choosing to be childfree in a society that very much expects the opposite. Olive and her friends are all on different paths in life, and although they have a strong, lifelong bond, there is a fundamental divide and misunderstanding amongst them. These tumultuous relationships give rise to some interesting questions regarding society’s view on what it is to be a mother.
Nonfiction pairings: (M)otherhood by Pragya Agarwal
Motherhood: Feminism’s Unfinished Business by Eliane Glaser
