As a child, Daljit Nagra was captivated by versions of the Ramayana read to him by his grandparents. The traditional tale tells the story of Rama’s quest to recover his wife Sita from her abduction by Raavana, the Lord of the Underworld. The tale has been celebrated in many cultures and languages, and in many art forms: in drama and dance, in sculpture and painting, in prose and in poetry.
Now an award-winning poet of dazzling gifts, Daljit Nagra has created a modern version of the Ramayana to captivate today’s readers. Nagra is a crosser of cultures and languages, a poet whose writing is accessible, energetic, and direct. He is also a great performer of his work: this evening will be a treat for fans of stories and of poetry, those familiar with the Ramayana and those hearing it for the first time.
