Carlos Acosta danced his way from Havana to the Royal Ballet, where he made a name for himself as one of the world’s most accomplished performers. As if that were not enough of an achievement, he is also an award-winning translator, and now a hotly-anticipated début novelist.

In Pig’s Foot, the wonderfully sardonic Oscar Mandinga narrates a tale that delves into the intimacies of family life in the Cuban hinterland. When Oscar wakes up to find himself frighteningly alone – his family vanished and his world devoid of human life – he embarks on a journey to his ancestral village, with only an inherited pig’s-foot amulet for company. Acosta skilfully uncovers the passion and tumult inherent in Cuba’s secret history – a history deeply entangled with the truth about Oscar’s own identity.

Acosta writes with the energy and discipline required of a world-class dancer – his unique blend of talents add interesting perspectives to this vital, exciting and darkly comic novel.
