Celebrated as a poet, playwright and novelist, Simon Armitage is now making quite a name for himself in travel writing – join us in discovering the full range of his talents!
Wandering along the coastal path from Somerset to Land’s End may seem like an unusual vacation for an award-winning poet such as Simon Armitage – Doing so without a penny in his pocket and relying on donations from audiences to pay his way sounds even more peculiar. And yet for Armitage, who conducted that exact journey back in 2013, it was familiar territory: he had previously trekked from the Scottish borders to his home in Yorkshire back in 2010, which culminated in the much-heralded work, Walking Home.
His latest adventures produced the acclaimed publication “imaginatively entitled” (in his own words) Walking Away. Full of his trademark wit and elegant prose, this is a gem of a book, perfect for literary travel and poetry enthusiasts everywhere.
Recently elected to the highly prestigious position of Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford, Simon has won a large variety of awards, recognising his achievements in the world of literature, poetry, film, theatre and radio. This is going to be a fantastic evening, ideal for anyone looking to hear from one of Britain’s most accomplished writers, and we look forward to giving Simon another warm St Andrews’ welcome!
