A beautiful and deeply moving book — Sally Rooney

Taking its title from Virginia Woolf, Square Haunting is an eloquent and poignant study of five remarkable women who lived in London’s Mecklenburgh Square. Exploring the lives of modernist poet HD, novelist Dorothy L. Sayers, classicist Jane Harrison, economic historian Eileen Power, and of course, Virginia Woolf, Francesca Wade offers an account that is alive to the ideas and innovations of her subjects, and to the great moments of history through which they lived.

Wade, editor of The White Review, writes with carefully measured prose, conjuring the textures of inter-war London. She lays bare the determination and autonomy of these trailblazing women who, finding rooms of their own, carved out a space in which they could live, love, and work freely.
