Prize winning novelist (and former head of the Downing Street Policy Unit) Ferdinand Mount will be joining us to discuss his new book, The Tears of the Rajas, a sweeping history of the British in India, seen through the experiences of his grandmother’s Scottish family.

For a century the Lows of Clatto survived mutiny, siege, debt and disease, everywhere from the heat of Madras to the Afghan snows. They lived through the most appalling atrocities and retaliated with some of their own. Using their letters and diaries he delves into their history, bringing life not only to the dramatic incidents of they witnessed (including the massacre at Vellore and the conquest of Java) but also to the personal ordeals that repeatedly shook the family to their core.

An epic saga of love, war, intrigue and treachery, The Tears of the Rajas is surely destined to join his memoir Cold Cream as an undeniable classic.
