Pure is about a young engineer in pre-Revolutionary Paris who has to oversee the demolition of Les Innocents, a cemetery stuffed to bursting point with decomposing bodies. It is imbued with the Revolutionary ideas that would come to fruition only a few short years later and is an unashamedly intellectual novel – but the drama, and the stench of rotting corpses, burst out of every page.
