Miller wanted to actively re-engage with life and reading, instead of living in the automatic. He wanted to lose himself in a book, and to fill the nagging sense that something was missing in his life. In A Year of Reading Dangerously: How Fifty Great Books Saved My Life, Miller recounts how he made his way through all the the books he had always intended to read, ones that he had claimed to have read, and ones he had simply never quite got round to. His tender and funny journey through the works of George Eliot and Tolstoy, to Dan Brown and Douglas Adams, changed the way he saw the world, and creates a fascinating autobiography and anthology of informal essays, musing on the way we read, why we read, and what it’s doing for us.
