In Guy Standing’s new book, The Precariat, he looks at the growing number of people across the world living and working precariously, usually in a series of short-term jobs and without recourse to social or occupational stability.

This class of people can produce instabilities within society. Increasingly frustrated, they are dangerous because they lack a voice, and are therefore vulnerable to the siren calls of extreme political parties.

This is a topical and radical book, which outlines not only the problem but a potential solution, which would involve more people in civil society and re-engage the precariat.
