Chloë Schama’s biography of Theresa Yelverton explores the struggle of an ordinary woman in her desperate attempt to release herself from her bigamist husband in Victorian England. Catapulted into fame, Yelverton experienced the unsettling issues of being a single woman in Victorian society and, having had her fortune consumed by her former husband, supported herself thereafter by writing about her travels.
